This Morning Routine Will Improve Your Mood

Up & At ‘Em (or at least make it out of bed).

It all begins with the alarm going off. The snooze button. Another late start.

Mornings can be easier.

the National Institute for Mental Health NAMI recommends the following steps for a brighter morning:

  1. Approach your day with ease.

  • Expose yourself to natural light or a light-up alarm
  • Turn on some energizing music
  • Exercise and/or stretch to get your blood pumping

  2. Eat Breakfast - Breakfast helps nourish your brain and body,  and helps you be free from  distractions.

  3. Read something informative, but not overstimulating. The news could be too anxiety-provoking to start your day. Interested in brain science? Astronomy? Computer programming? art? Start your day learning about your interests.

 4. Move your body - Start small. Light stretches or even a walk throughout your home can be a small step, especially for those who have been sitting home through the pandemic.

 5. Plan out what you want to accomplish - make it achievable. Have you run a 5K? Great! Run those kilometers in the morning. Do you usually spend all day in a chair in front of the TV or computer? Start small with stretches and walk around the block.

 6. With a plan and a few changes, mornings can be easier than ever.
